Sony has just announced the launch of their latest prime lens for full-frame E-mount mirrorless cameras, the FE 50mm f/1.4 GM (model SEL50F14GM). This lightweight and compact lens belongs to Sony’s esteemed G Master lens family and is designed to provide a natural field of view, making it an ideal choice for everyday use.

As a member of the G Master lenses, the FE 50mm f/1.4 GM features an advanced optical design that includes two XA (extreme aspherical) elements to correct field curvature and reduce most types of aberration. Additionally, the lens features an ED (extra-low dispersion) element that helps to reduce chromatic aberration and deliver sharp and clear images without any distortion.
To suppress unwanted reflections, Sony’s Nano AR Coating II has been utilized, while the front element has a fluorine coating to make it easier to clean. Furthermore, the lens barrel is dust and moisture resistant, ensuring that it can be used in a wide range of environmental conditions.
Autofocusing is handled by high-thrust XD (extreme dynamic) linear motors that enable fast and precise autofocus. In fact, Sony claims that the lens can autofocus up to 1.9x faster than the original Sony/Zeiss 50mm F1.4 ZA lens from 2016. The FE 50mm f/1.4 GM also features a clicking aperture ring for stills shooters with the option to de-click if you’re shooting video. There is also a switch to lock it into or out of the ‘A’ position that passes aperture control to the camera.
With a minimum focus distance of 0.41m, the lens can achieve a magnification of 0.16x when using the autofocus system, while it can focus as close as 0.38 meters and achieve a magnification of 0.18x in manual focus mode. The lens features an 11-blade circular aperture that delivers attractive bokeh.
The lens also exhibits some focus breathing, which causes a narrower field-of-view at close focus distances. However, this issue is supported by Sony’s Focus Breathing Correction feature on recent cameras, which crops-in video to the tightest field of view and maintains it even as the focus moves towards infinity.
Weighing in at 516g (18.2oz), the FE 50mm f/1.4 GM is smaller, lighter, sharper, and less expensive than the Sony/Zeiss 50mm F1.4 ZA version. The lens will be available for purchase from late April/early May at a recommended price of $1299. All in all, the FE 50mm f/1.4 GM lens is a versatile and practical option that can help photographers capture stunning and memorable images in a wide range of situations.
